Description

British mathematical physicist and engineer (1824-1907) who, as the Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its modern form. He received the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1883, was its President between 1890-1895, and in 1892 was the first British scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords. ALS signed “Kelvin,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, 28 Chester Square letterhead, June 25, 1896. Letter to Mr. Bertrand, in full: "Through you I desire to express to the Academy of Sciences, my warmest thanks for the great honour it has conferred on me, and the great kindness it has shown me, in presenting to me the Arago Medal, and sending it to me by the hands of our colleague Mr. Mascart; from whom I received it on the 16th of June on the occasion of the celebration of the Jubilee of my Professorship in the University of Glasgow. I also thank very cordially all my colleagues of the Academy for the most kind words in which Mr. Mascart expressed their message to me of affection, of good will, and of congratulations on the occasion." In fine condition.
