Writer and poet (1904-1979) best known for his Studs Lonigan trilogy. TLS signed “Jim,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, June 6, 1939. Letter to George Stevens of the Saturday Review of Literature, in part: "I have decided in my reading of American books from now on to annotate in the back of each book all references to baseball. Sometime, maybe a year from now, I will have collected enough material for what might, I think, be an interesting article—baseball in American fiction—that is, of course, leaving aside the junk. There is little of it in fiction, but also, one might find in many ways, the creeping into it of the jargon and slang of baseball. Anyway, sometime in the future when I am a little free, and if I collected enough interesting material to make this kind of an article worth while, I am going to do it, and if you want first glance at it, I'll let you see it." In very good to fine condition, with creasing to the margins.
