Educator and poet (1859-1929) best known for the lyrics to the iconic patriotic song 'America the Beautiful.' ALS, one page both sides, 5.5 x 8.5, Wellesley College letterhead, September 7, 1921. Letter to young author Leighton Rollins, praising some poems he sent. In part: "We are so happy to have you happy…We have enjoyed the poems together. The stars never snap their silver eyes in Wellesley, but we appreciate the joy of nature in all the poems, and we both love Gray, especially its three concluding lines." The letter is followed by a note from "Aunt Marion," with a verse below. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addresses in Bates's hand.
