Description

John Greenleaf Whittier

ALS signed “John G. Whittier,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, January 12, 1888. Written from Amesbury, a letter to Eliza Higginson, in part: "I am greatly pained to hear of thy honored & beloved uncle’s death. The world seems poorer lacking his benign and beautiful presence. I have always regretted that I could not meet him oftener, for indeed he seemed very near to me. I know not when I can look for another combining all the gifts and graces, which made him emphatically a Christian gentleman. I am afraid it will not be possible for me to join you in paying the tribute…and reverence at his funeral. I am suffering from the changes of the seasons, and do not at present venture abroad to any extent. But I shall be with you in spirit, sorrowing that I shall see his face no more, but grateful to our Heavenly Father for the gift to humanity of such a pure and noble life. I recall with pleasure always the summer days at Asquam with thy dear aunt, Mrs. Nichols and thyself. My cousin Gertrude and I often wish we could meet you both again at the same place. Will thee give her my love? Thanking thee for thy kind letter, dear niece Higginson." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Whittier's own hand.
