Description

A glowing recommendation for a regent of the University of New York

LS signed “C. A. Arthur,” one page, 6 x 9, December 21, 1876. Letter to Isaac Hayes. In part: “I understand that the friends of Dr. Wm. H. Watson of Utica, N.Y. will present him as a candidate for Regent of the University to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of George R. Perkins of that city. Dr. Watson is a gentleman of culture, ability, and high personal character who deservedly enjoys the cordial respect and esteem of many of the best people in the state…. If you can give him your support it will gratify all our friends here and especially myself.” A touch of mild soiling and tiny pinhole to each page, otherwise fine condition. An eloquent endorsement from Arthur. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
