Description

Proust signs his translation of Ruskin's Sesame and Lilies

French writer, creator of the sixteen-volume Remembrance of Things Past (1922-1931), regarded as one of the greatest achievements in world literature. Signed book: Sesame et les Lys [a translation of John Ruskin's Sesame and Lilies]. First edition. Paris: Societe Du Mercure de France, 1906. Rebound hardcover, 4.75 x 7.25, 224 pages. Signed and inscribed, in French, on a free end page between the title and half-title page (translated): "To Mr. Louis Paul as a token of affectionate acknowledgment of his youthful spirit's delicate comprehension, my sincere thanks. His friend Marcel Proust." Rebound as noted, toning and light soiling to signed page, as well as a chip to lower right corner, uniform toning to inside pages, creasing and soiling to former paper cover, and light surface wear to the rebound cover's leather hinges, otherwise very good condition.

Proust was in ill health when this particular translation was published, but it's arrival immensely bolstered his spirits. His contribution to work was substantial, including a 59-page preface and nearly 200 notes. Proust was so proud of the product that he immediately began to sign and send copies of the book to his friends, including this example, dedicated to Mr. Paul's "youthful spirit's delicate comprehension." Rare in any form, particularly signed books. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
