Less than two weeks after the death of his First Lady

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, August 17, 1914. Wilson sends a letter headed “Personal” to L. V. Ashbaugh at the Daily News in St. Paul, Minnesota. In full: “Let me thank you warmly for your kind letter of August 13th, and tell you of my deep appreciation of your generous editorial. I have read it with interest and gratification….” Wilson’s first wife, the former Ellen Axson (born 1860), died less than two weeks earlier, on August 6. Light soiling and handling wear, and two file holes to top margin, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
