Description

Two items: Lower portion of a partly printed DS, signed “Ira Allen” and “Rufus King” as U.S. Minister to Great Britain, one page, 7.75 x 6.25, dated May 5, 1798. Allen is described as “Forty five years of age, Five feet 7 1/2 inches in height, dark eyes, large mouth, ordinary nose, high & bald forehead, short chin, dark complexion, dark hair and eyebrows, and round face.” Cracked but intact diameter red wax seal is affixed at lower right. A lightly penciled note in the lower left from historian Peter Force (1790-1868): “I should be glad/to have this - these are/not from Mr King./P. Force”; and a secretarial manuscript document, one page, 7.75 x 12.5, headed in English in unknown hand, “Copy of General Allen’s passport,” the document is in French, identifying Ira Allen as a citizen of the United States of America. Dated at The Hague, August 6, 1796, it is signed “John Q. Adams,” as U.S. Minister to the Netherlands by the secretary who handwrote the copy. Scattered toning to both, slight fold separations and a 5 x 2 clipped area from manuscript. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
