Description

Rare dual-signed sheet music cover for Shall We Dance, released two months before George Gershwin's passing

Vintage front cover of a sheet music booklet for the 1937 musical comedy Shall We Dance, 8.75 x 11.75, depicting Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers leaning on the railing of a ship with two dogs, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “For Trudy Wellman, Sincere good wishes, from George Gershwin” and “and Ira Gershwin.” Double-matted with portraits of the brothers to an overall size of 24 x 16.25. In fine condition. The recipient, Trudy Wellman, worked as a script clerk for several movies in the 1930s and 1940s. A desirable dual-signed sheet music for Shall We Dance, the score of which is probably the largest source of Gershwin orchestral works unavailable to the general public, at least since the advent of modern stereo recording techniques in the 1950s. The film is perhaps best remembered for the song ‘Let's Call the Whole Thing Off,’ which ranked No. 34 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs. Shall We Dance was released on May 7, 1937, just two months before George Gershwin succumbed to a brain tumor at the age of 38 on July 11, 1937.
