Description

"From your lonesome and loving Groucho"

TLS signed in pencil as “Groucho,” one page, 8.5 x 11, circa 1930s. Letter to his family, "Svenskie, Arthur, Miriam and Mother," in full: "To night I have the glooms, and the best way to chase them is to write you all a letter. I am up again after three days in bed and two in the house, and don't feel particularly good. This afternoon I went up to see Garrulous Doc Hoffman. He gave me three hours of talk about the love life of his patients, and very interesting too, after which he extracted a needle from one of his many medicinal drawers and squirted some mysterious fluid into my veins and told me to come back Monday. He spends so much time listening to himself talk, that he has hardly any time for his patients, and frequently makes very rapid and I imagine, inaccurate diagnoses. I seem to suffer from these periodical attacks of mild flu or grippe, and just when I was congratulating myself that the Haliver capsules were warding the germs off, bang, and I was flat on my back. However I will survive this attack, and come back duller than ever.

I will be happy when I know definitely whether you are coming on, or I am going home. I don't want to be a hypocrite and have you believe I have had no fun since you left. That wouldn't be true and I don't think you would want me to sit in my room night after night and brood, but I'll take the home and the family life, I am afraid the life of a carefree bachelor is a little too much for one of my sedentary disposition and temperament, and I yearn for the fireplace and slippers and its attendant joys.

We are broadcasting for the audition Tuesday, and I am not sure how good the material is, but I think it will pass. It all depends on how the people feel who listen to it, whether they have had a good nights rest the night previous, whether they have been successful in their sex life, all these I am sure are contributory factors in our getting a job.

Before you get this, Boshky will be home and she can explain to you in detail (I'll say she can) all the little things that are so difficult to tell in a letter. Kauffman heard the idea that Moss Hart and I had for our show and he likes it, and there is a possibility (if he has the time) that he may do it with Hart. This is quite vague yet, so I don't think it would be wise for you to discuss it, but it's very encouraging. I wish I could kiss you all good night, as soon as I know something definite about the broadcast I will call you on the phone. All my love to you and the Kids. From your lonesome and loving Groucho." Marx adds several 'x' marks next to his signature, and he makes a few handwritten corrections to the text. In fine condition.
