Celebrated American-born writer (1843-1916) who spent much of his literary career in England and who remains best known for his novels exploring Victorian manners and morals. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 6.5, Kingsway Theatre letterhead, no date but circa late 1911. Letter headed "Copy of Address to be sent to Maxim Gorky," in full: "We the undersigned beg to offer you our sincere congratulations on the serious attention and favourable reception given to your drama 'The Lower Depths' by a full and representative audience on the occasion of its performance at the Kingsway Theatre, being its first public performance in England, on the 2nd December, 1911." Matted and framed with a portrait of James to an overall size of 18 x 14. In very good to fine condition, with the typed text very faded, but still readable; James's signature remains bold.
