One-of-a-kind original pair of hand-colored preliminary designs for a Led Zeppelin 20th Anniversary poster by psychedelic artist Gary Grimshaw, both 6 x 9.25, individually affixed to slightly larger mats, signed on the mats in black ink, “1988 ArtRock, Gary Grimshaw,” adding “Sketch #1” and “Sketch #2” to the respective work. Accomplished with a mixture of ink, paint, and colored pencil and marker around affixed cutout images of the band, with differing “Led Zeppelin” logos, “20th Anniversary” text, and background designs; both pieces share a noticeably purple and magenta color pattern. In overall fine condition. Influenced by Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin, and Victor Moscoso, Grimshaw has earned his own place within the rock and roll art scene by producing eclectic posters for bands like Cream, The Who, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. A band's approval must be obtained before printing a poster using their name and likeness; these preliminary mock-ups were created for Led Zeppelin for this purpose. The final “20th Anniversary” poster featured the background from the first sketch and the logo from the second, with a Zeppelin airship added behind the logo.
