TLS signed “George,” three pages, 8.25 x 10.5, March 4, 1953. Letter to Columbia execs Harry Cohn and Jerry Wald regarding the script for It Should Happen to You. In part: “Late Monday afternoon, Gar read the revised script from beginning to end. It was over-lengthy of course, but that is not serious at this stage of then game. In my opinion, he has accomplished most of the goals that we had set for him. The Pete-Gladys story has been immeasurably improved. It has gained motion and conflict. Pete’s character is now a rounded human being, and Gladys is no longer an obsest [sic], freakish creature. Gar has put real bite into the Gladys-Brod relationship by giving them a very good, strong scene towards the end, when the scales fall from her eyes and she sees clearly Brod’s manipulation of her. He has also devised a most effective, dramatic—and very fancy sequence to provide that ‘moment of humiliation’ that we were searching for…I hope you will think that we accomplished what we set out to do. I think we have, but you will be the judges. I know this, that Judy’s part has much more variety, emotion and opportunities to do the kind of thing that she does better than anyone, and many of the pitfalls are removed. The men’s parts are also infinitely better. Spencer Tracy and Gottfried Reinhardt arrived on Monday to begin working with Gar next week.” In very good condition, with scattered wrinkling, central damp staining to each page (most noticeably on the first), and a rusty paperclip impression to top edge.
