Full free frank, 10 x 8, folded to a size of 5.25 x 2.75, addressed in another hand to “Mr. James Drake, Brunswick, New Jersey,” and franked in the lower left corner, “Free, John Adams.” Panel also bears a “23 FE,” postmark and a “Free” stamp to upper right, and is also docketed on the reverse “1797.” In good to very good condition, with a vertical fold through a single letter of franking signature, and moderate toning from old tape repairs along all folds on reverse over the entire signature and affecting appearance.
James Drake was the owner and proprietor of the Indian Queen Tavern and hotel in Brunswick, New Jersey. Because those who traveled between New York and Philadelphia usually passed through Brunswick, the hotel became a well-known resting place for travelers.
