President—and gambling man: “I’m sure that those cards will bring me luck”

Scarce ALS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, May 13, 1948. Truman sends handwritten thanks to his secretary, Lauretta Young. In full: “Thanks a lot for the nice birthday present. I’m sure that those cards will bring me luck. It was thoughtful of you and Rose to remember the day.” Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope bearing the notation “Mrs. Lauretta Young, White House” in Truman’s hand. In very good condition, with light scattered staining and soiling (touching several words of text and, lightly, the signature). The writing is clear and dark throughout.
