Scarce presidential ALS from Arthur, who takes time to write to a widow, and “send you my sympathy in your great affliction"

Scarce ALS, in pencil, as president signed “C. A. Arthur,” one lightly-lined page, 8 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, December 7, 1883. Arthur composes a telegram of condolence, in full: “I am much grieved to hear of the death of Colonel Burns & send you my sympathy in your great affliction.” Addressed at the top in Arthur's hand to “Mrs. Burns, 58 Beach Street, New York,” with the date added in a secretarial hand. In fine condition, with several mailing folds and slight paper loss to top corners from mounting remnants on reverse. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
