Arthur casually pulls the plug on the Marine Artillery: “That branch of the department is to be entirely closed and all the employees therein, terminated.”

Early ALS signed “C. A. Arthur, Insp. Genl,” one page, 8 x 10, State of New York, Inspector General’s Office letterhead, April 8, 1862. War dated letter to a clerk. In part, “In accordance with my previous instructions, as soon as all the clothing for the Marine Artillery has been delivered and inspected, that branch of the department is to be entirely closed and all the employees therein, terminated.” In fine condition, with expected mailing folds, small split along one fold and a few spots of light toning along folds.
