Description

Revolutionary War dated ALS by Jay the year he became President of the Continental Congress

First chief justice of the Supreme Court. In 1795 he negotiated 'Jay's Treaty' with England, in which America agreed to pay its pre-war debts in return for Britain leaving the Northwest. ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.5, February 26, 1778. A terrific letter to General Philip Schuyler in command of the Northern Department of the Continental Army in New York. Jay, then Chief Justice of the State of New York, declines Schuyler's offer of a farm, writing "I am under the necessity of denying myself the pleasure of being your neighbor. My father's infirmities have so increased as to render a removal to Saratoga so inconvenient and painful... that he cannot prevail upon himself to under take I. In fine condition, with light overall toning, some show through from docketing on reverse and expected folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
