Jay, then Chief Justice of the State of New York, declines Schuyler's offer of a farm, writing "I am under the necessity of denying myself the pleasure of being your neighbor. My father's infirmities have so increased as to render a removal to Saratoga so inconvenient and painful... that he cannot prevail upon himself to under take I.
