Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt

High-quality black leather folder given by President Roosevelt as a Christmas gift in 1942, embossed in gold with a presentation inscription on the front, “Christmas, 1942, from F. D. R.” The folder measures 3 x 6.75 and features two inside pockets. Housed inside is a U.S. War Savings Bonds booklet with two affixed 25-cents war saving stamps. When filled, the album could be redeemed for a $25 bond at the cost of $18.75. In fine condition, with inner pages of the War Bonds booklet detached from one of the binding staples. Mary Evans Seeley's reference book Seasons Greetings From the White House indicates that this gift to the White House staff originally included one War Bond stamp from the president; this recipient added just one more. Seeley does not provide a count of how many were distributed, but she does point out that only 300 executive office gifts were given in 1943, so it is reasonable to assume that roughly the same number were given in 1942.
