Description

The first lady schedules a White House picnic with her literary agent

TLS as first lady, one page, 6 x 9.25, White House letterhead, August 8, 1936. Letter to her literary agent George T. Bye, in part: "I am reading the letter you enclosed to the President, but it seems to me we will have to find some other way other than starvation to reduce our population! I have written to Mrs. Hallie Flanagan to see Crosby Gaige as soon as possible. Do you think that Wednesday, August 12th would be a good day for a picnic here for all those who were at your picnic?…I will be delighted to have you all come early enough for a swim, or to have you stay and have a swim after lunch. I am afraid Carmel Lake is my mistake, but I certainly said 'well'! We did enjoy our day with you and Mrs. Bye and left with great reluctance. I hope we can give you as pleasant a day. Unfortunately, my husband won't be here," adding in her own hand, "but I hope Franklin Jr. and John will be." She adds a typed postscript: "'Green Laurels' has just come and I am looking forward to reading it with great interest. Many, many thanks." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope. Hallie Flanagan, referenced here, was the director of the Federal Theatre Project, a part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) created by FDR's New Deal.
