Description

DS in French, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 7.5 x 10, February 5, 1790. A printed report, in full (translated): "Gentlemen, I prize your kindness and your letters so highly that I cannot but rejoice with you about the King's decision to consolidate our Liberty and to deny any attempt against his People and himself as well as to make public his sentiments and his principles I am happy to note that this declaration will have a salutary influence on the pledge of public order. Only by assuring obedience to the Decrees of the Assembly, the upholding of the laws and the essential collection of Taxes of the State will we reaffirm our beautiful Constitution of which the King desires to be the most zealous defender. I am taking this occasion, gentlemen, to assure you of all my gratitude." Signed neatly at the conclusion by the Marquis de Lafayette. In very good to fine condition, with toning and foxing to the edges. Documents by Lafayette relating so directly to the French Revolution are rare and sought after.
