Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.75 x 20, December 27, 1899. President McKinley appoints Benjamin Alvord as "Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, with the rank of Major, in the service of the United States." Signed boldly at the conclusion by William McKinley as president, and countersigned by Secretary of War Elihu Root. Blue War Office seal remains affixed to lower left corner. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, and faint dampstaining.

The recipient of this commission is likely Benjamin Alvord Jr. (1860-1927), an American soldier and the son of noted scientist and soldier Benjamin Alvord. Alvord Jr. was promoted to brigadier general and in May 1917 was the adjutant general of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his service during the war.
