Two items signed by three Confederate generals: a letter in the hand of Bradley T. Johnson (incorporating his full name within the text), signed at the conclusion by Matthew Calbraith Butler (“M. C. Butler”), in full: "For value received I hereby transfer the one share of Stock standing in my name on the Books of the Jordan Mountain Manganese Mining Company to Bradley T. Jonson & hereby direct the officers of the company to transfer the same to him"; and an ink signature, "John S. Williams, Ky.," on an off-white 6.5 x 2.25 slip. In overall fine condition.
CSA Cavalry General Bradley T. Johnson (1829-1903) Helped Organize the 1st Maryland (CSA) Regiment. As Colonel he fought in all the battles of Stonewall Jackson's valley campaign. He commanded a Brigade at Gettysburg. He was made Brig. General in June 1864 and given command of William E. Jones' cavalry after Jones was killed. He commanded a Brigade of Cavalry under General Jubal Early during Early's advance into Maryland and PA. There, Johnson burned down Chambersburg, PA. In November 1864 he became Commander of a POW camp in Salisbury, N.C. Post War he resumed his law practice.
Matthew C. Butler (1836-1909) was a Major General in both the Confederate Army (Civil War) and U.S. Army (Spanish Am. War). Between wars he was a U.S. Senator, representing South Carolina. His maternal uncles were Navy luminaries Oliver Hazard Perry and Matthew Calbraith Perry. His father-in-law was Governor Francis Pickens of S.C.
John S. Williams (1818-1898) was a Colonel of the 4th KY Vols. in the Mexican War, earning the nickname 'Cerro Gordo Williams' for gallantry in the Battle of Cerro Gordo. He was Brigadier General of the 5th KY Inf. (CSA) and also fought with CSA Genl. Joe Wheeler’s Cavalry. He served as a U.S. Senator (1879-85) and was a co-founder of Naples, Florida.
