Partly-printed DS, signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 9.5, July 11, 1823. Notice of appointment issued to Hannibal Day by the War Department, in part: "You are hereby informed, that on the first instant the President of the United States appointed you a Second Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by John C. Calhoun as secretary of war. In very good to fine condition, with a diagonal crease across the lower blank area.
