French journalist (1826-1871) who was the eldest son of Victor Hugo and Adèle Foucher. Untranslated ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.25 x 10.75, L'Événement Journal du Soir letterhead, August 20, 1851. Dramatic letter to his colleagues written from the Conciergerie Prison, with Hugo concluding with an impassioned "Democracy! Humanity!!" In fine condition, with toning to the top half of the second page. In the early summer of 1851, Charles, age 25, was arrested for writing critically about the death sentence of an executed man named Montcharmant. At his trial on June 11, Victor Hugo spoke spiritedly in his son's defense, but Charles was ultimately fined and sent to prison for six months. He joined his father in exile when he was released from Conciergerie on January 28, 1852.
