Description

ALS as president, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, October 23, 1885. Letter to a gentleman in Buffalo, in part: "I thank you for the kind invitation to be your guest during my contemplated stay in Buffalo. I often feel now that I ought not to have made plans to vote this year, because it seems almost impossible to spend the time it will involve, away from the seat of government. And if I go at all I must not stay in Buffalo but a few hours, returning the same day I arrive. So you see I shall hardly stay anywhere except in the car; and yet I hope I may be able within the short time I allow myself, to see you and Mrs. Brown. I have wondered more than once why it was that you had not looked in on us here, and I hope you will not continue to neglect this administration. The assurance you give me that I am remembered in your prayers is most comforting. I daily feel…I will not say discouraged, but—depressed at the prospect of all I have to do and the appreciation of my weakness." Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition.
