Description

Rare autograph letter by the German Romantic

Highly important German composer and pianist (1810-1856) whose distinctively lyrical musical language, especially evident in his keyboard works and art songs, made him one of the central figures of the German Romantic tradition. ALS in German, signed “R. Schumann,” one page, 8.25 x 7.25, July 15, 1839. Letter to the organist and musicologist, Karl Ferdinand Becker (1775–1849), collaborator of Schumann, for the 'New Review for Music.' In full (translated): "Once again, may I kindly remind you of your promise about the Encyclopedia and Marx’s books. It might be a good idea, if the articles were to follow one another quickly, so that people could have an overall model, as opposed to just music, and as they should be. In the new programme, I have numbered the insertion as 15/16: could you have the items ready by then (by August 12th)? Maybe I’ll hear from you the day after tomorrow." In very good to fine condition, with light creasing, intersecting folds, and small areas of restored paper loss to the top edge.
