Riding of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in part: "Accept my thanks for your long and kind letter of the 24th inst. I have not read Mr. Blake's article to which you refer nor is it probable that I shall abstract from other engagements…Mr. Witsler has given me an account of its general tenor, and has…among papers which were brought from Concord a copy of a letter written to Mr. B., in June 1852, from which Mr. W. informs me that Burke has extracted a single sentence into his article. I inclose a copy of the letter to you not for publication but to show you how it corresponds with all I did & said in relation to my nomination and election. The letter inclosed…was a reply I have not at hand and hence you cannot understand its precise points. You know…all the gentlemen from NH who went to Baltimore & with whom I…know that I objected earnestly throughout against having my name brought before the Convention so long as there should be a prospect of nomination any one of the Gentlemen there prominently before the County—nor under such circumstances unless by name should be brought forward from some other part of the Country than N.H." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed by Pierce who has franked the upper left, "Free, Frank. Pierce."
