Description

Career US Army officer (1821-1878) who fought in the Mexican-American War and Civil War, fighting in the Peninsula Campaign and at the Siege of Suffolk. Civil War-dated ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, October 31, 1862. In part: "My impression is that the Gov'r can transfer James to any vacancy in one of the Regts…I think it will be better for the Governor to do it, as the War Dept. is a slow and tedious department for matters of this kind. At the Dept., they would assume an exchange of officers & one would have to be hunted up. Unless James is senior 2nd Lt. in his Regt. his promotion would not follow viz Alex's promotion, since promotion is regimental and not by companies…My advice is for James to be transferred to one of the Regts in my command, where I will give him a place as Aid. His opportunities for improvement will be greatly enhanced. He will have occasion to learn the art of fortification, can improve in both Heavy & Field Art'y, will become familiar with all the Infantry…James has now been in the service long enough to firmly establish his reputation…In my judgment at the close of the war, there will be a grand reduction, and only those will be retained who have distinguished themselves, and who have strong friends…My troops are active. Every week they meet the enemy. Last Friday they crossed the Blackwater…& made a successful raid. Last night at 3 1/2 we attacked Franklin, shelling it across the river thoroughly, and then pushed on up some 18 or 20 m's." The second integral page has been professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition, with some areas of light toning.
