Rare manuscript DS in French, signed “Le M'al de Vauban,” one page, 8 x 12.25, December 26, 1704. Rare certificate by Vauban, Commissioner General for the French fortifications, who praises one of his colleagues who was injured under his command during the Siege of Besançon. In part (translated): "We, Marechal de Vauban, Commissioner General for French fortifications, Governor of the citadel of Lille, certify to all that Mr. de Beaufort Captain in the Dauphin regiment has very well served the King under our command as engineer during many years and with diligence during the Holland Campaign in 1672, then in Audenarde and during the Siege of Besançon, where he was injured in the right hand by a grenade, which left him handicapped. As he asked us for this certificate, we gave him for any use he may have." In fine condition, with a small stain to the upper left corner.
