American politician and civil rights leader (1940–2020) who as Chairman of the SNCC was one of the 'Big Six' leaders who organized the 1963 March on Washington, and who led the famed march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge from Selma to Montgomery (now known as 'Bloody Sunday'), which sped up the passage of 1965’s Voting Rights Act.
