Unique soup can artwork created by renowned digital artist Laurence Gartel in honor of his 2017 exhibition 'Warhol vs.Gartel, Hyp Pop' at the Lucca Center of Contemporary Art in Italy. The sealed Campbell's Soup can featuring Spiderman measures approximately 4″ tall and 2.75″ in diameter, and is wrapped in vinyl, prismatic material, and colored duct tape to create a unique piece of art. It is also hand-decorated with white and black inks by Gartel, and signed on the bottom in black felt tip, "Gartel 2017." The lettering Gartel added in white reads, "Warhol vs. Gartel, Hyp Pop!, Italy, L.u.C.C.A. Museum, Feb 25, June 18, 2017." Includes a handwritten note by Gartel, reading: "Laurence Gartel, 'Re-Pop Spiderman,' celebrating the exhibition: 'Warhol vs. Gartel Hyp Pop,' Lucca Museum, Italy, Feb 25-June 18, 2017," with a sketch of Spiderman's face on the opposite side (folded over). In fine condition.
Considered the 'father of digital art,' the New York born-and-raised Gartel has worked in the digital medium for nearly forty years—preceding even the advent of the personal computer. Gartel taught Andy Warhol to use the Commodore Amiga in order to make a Debbie Harry album cover, and was friends with many of those in the NYC art scene. Gartel's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Long Beach Museum of Art, Princeton Art Museum, and Norton Museum of Art, and is also included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History, Bibliothque Nationale in Paris, and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He was the official artist of the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, and created a massive Grammy statue wrapped in psychedelic vinyl that still resides at The Recording Academy. In honor of his blockbuster Italian exhibition 'Warhol vs.Gartel, Hyp Pop,' Gartel created twelve of these pop culture soup can 'sculptures' as an homage to the greatest work in Warhol's oeuvre—his famed Campbell's Soup cans.
