ALS, one page both sides, 8.25 x 10.75, November 23, 1955. Addressed from “Casa El Moli” in Palma, Mallorca, a handwritten letter to Miss Van Gelder, in part: “Let me thank you for your kind good offices — if you can read this — it’s hard to thank someone on the deck of a boat when it’s blowing nearly forty knots & you don’t dare go below because your [anchor sketch] might start dragging. In spite of any ugly rumours to the contrary I did learn to write and even read once in the dim past. Have sent check to Abercrombie & Fitch $105.98/100—(Carramba! Could they have made a sweeping gesture & called it $106?) Now—re the stove—this benighted culinary son of a bitch is beginning to assure to proportions of the Holy Grail, the Golden Fleece of Homer & Jack Warner’s safety deposit box. The insurance papers have all been sent to the shippers. Why the captain did this I don’t know and only hope said shippers (have to take care how to spell this) have contacted you—so I can get another stove—& begin eating. These shippers did a lousy job of crating. If you expedite things with the Insurance, shippers & God knows what else Miss Jill, I’ll be eternally grateful & will most certainly invite you to come and cook on it—Whassat? You don’t cook? OK fine just come anyway.” In fine condition.
