Description

President Hayes sends a letter to "the Prince of Roumania," officially acknowledging "the independence of that country"

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 8 x 10, November 20, 1880. President Hayes directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to an envelope containing my reply to a letter of the Prince of Roumania [sic], announcing the independence of that country.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition.

On June 14, 1880, the United States and Romania established diplomatic relations with the appointment of the first American Diplomatic Agent in Romania, the noted scholar and explorer Eugene Schuyler. Symbolically, one of the first messages delivered in this new framework was the U.S. official recognition of Romania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire, illustrated by this very document on November 20, 1880.
