Exquisite 4.5 x 6.5 engraved portrait of Louis Pasteur by Eugene-Andre Champollion (featuring the facsimile signatures of both artist and subject within the image), affixed to its original 11 x 14.5 mount, nicely signed and inscribed on the mount in ink in French to his colleague, Dr. Jules Rochard (translated), "To Doctor Rochard, of the Academy of Medicine, with very fond remembrance, L. Pasteur." Handsomely framed to an overall size of 13.75 x 17.25. In fine condition, with a few spots of foxing to the mount. A naval doctor best known for his work on beriberi (thiamine deficiency), Jules Rochard had been a member of the Academy of Medicine since 1875. As part of a commission appointed by the Academy of Medicine, both men conducted research on the outbreak of the plague in Russia during the 1870s. A magnificent portrait of the esteemed scientist with an outstanding association.
